Building work has started on a brand new crematorium on a site off the A47 Leicester Road between Hinckley and Earl Shilton.

The Borough Council has appointed Kier Group Plc to undertake the building project which is due for completion in early 2022.

The £5M construction contract comprises a ceremonial hall suitable for multi faith services, a crematory hall to hold the crematorium plant and equipment and administrative offices. External works include memorial gardens, covered walkways, new roads and car parks.  A new access road to the site will be formed from the A47.

Leader of the council, Cllr Stuart Bray said: “It is fantastic to see this milestone reached. Once complete, we will be able to offer a modern, fit-for-purpose crematorium facility that meets the growing needs of the population of Hinckley and Bosworth and surrounding areas.

“With the nearest available crematorium currently located in Nuneaton, the new crematorium will provide an alternative affordable cremation facility with reduced waiting times for services and reduced traveling times for Hinckley and Bosworth residents.

“The facility will complement the council’s cemetery services, create jobs, enhance the appearance of the site, and will fit well with the burial services provided by the Borough Council.”

Martin Williamson, operations manager, at Kier Regional Building North & Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be working with Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council on this state-of-the-art facility. The project draws on our extensive experience of delivering projects within this sector.”
